Since we have snow up here in Illinois, there is a portion of the year when my paddling opportunities are limited. Accordingly, in the past, I have run, cross country skied, and swam in the off season. I particularly like swimming because I think that many of the same muscles and movements apply to the muscles that you use for paddling.
What do you do to train besides paddling? Doe it work as a good crossover trainer?

Iron pills! A good strong weight program with aeroebic training gives you a great jump on the spring training. Paddling is sustained strength so build those muscles. This is especially important as you get older. A great workout is-warmup with situps then a push/pull exercise sequence, i.e 10-12 reps presses followed by pulldowns/pullups or upright rows. Three sets each, Rows followed by benches or pushups, three sets. Finish with two sets arm curls and kneebends to keep legs and hips strong for portages. Finish with another set of situps.

Agree about the strength training, especially the core and upper body. I imagine for most starting in racing (as it was for me), if you try to paddle fast for any distance, your back, shoulders and arms will burn and ache long bf your cardio system gets stressed. Thats why I feel its most important to build your muscular strength and endurance first, for kayaking anyway. But put me in a foot race, and I'm a slug!! ;D

I agree whole heartedly about strengthing your core for endurance races. In 2009 I had a ton of trouble with my back being sore after canoe races. I got scared and wrote the reason for it off as getting older. In the off season I really tried to build up my core muscles to strengthen my back. It worked. In 2010 I paddled about 3x the miles I did in 2009 and in 2010 I had no back problems at all. Strengthened core = I am a believer
On second thought, maybe it was all of that cerveza I drank in the offseason putting a nice beer cushion in between my vertabre. :-)

Everyone - don't let this imposter fool you. He is posting here under his mild mannered name and has a secret identity. Even now he is bulking up on frijoles and other strange foreign concoctions waiting to descend on the unsuspecting people of southern Louisiana. You will see and be very afraid. You will lock your women away for the months of September and October. Oh the terror of it all. Wally, post the link to your u-tube clip showing your secret training regimen and let these southern racers in on the little known tricks of training for long distances.
October is a long way off but they can await the arrival of LHP with fear and dread!

Ah um ah, Ned, I do not know what you are talking about?!?! I am just ah um ah just a mild mannered paddler who occasionally likes to dress as a voyager reinactor so that I can have my picture taken with the Cajun Queens. Yeah, that is it! I have been lucky enough to be asked to be the roadie for Los Humungos Paddleos. Those guys are huge you know. :-) But I know this paddler from Illinois who has this brother who makes hot sauce in Louisiana who are both friends with this accountant from New Iberia who claims he once knew a guy who might have be Mastodontico of Los Humungos Paddleos. Unfortunately the accountant says he has no idea the true identity of LHP, but he said that that Los Humungos Paddleos are muy macho, I gaaarownteee. The accountant also said that he was given an LHP training video to help him train for next year. While the accountant was sworn to keep it secret, he passed it along to me. I guess he felt this would be a good addition to my training (imagine that). I will admit that it has helped him round into form so perhaps it will help me. For the good of the paddling community and the betterment of us all, I will pass it along to the possible participants of the Tour du Teche. enjoy... First the LHP luchador diet: Second, the LHP training: Beware....ah I mean Hut, Mild Mannered Wally Oh yeah, just in case you might see them walking around Breaux Bridge, I have attached a picture of Los Humungos Paddleos so you know who they are.
